Although 'F' is more electronegative than 'O' the highest Mn Fluoride is MnF4, where as the highest oxide is Mn2O7. Give the reason. Ans.  1. If we look at the electronic configuration of Mn, it has 7 electrons in its outermost shell. 25 Mn= [Ar] 18 3d 5 4S 2 So it Can give maximum 7 electrons. Though Fluorine is more electronegative, MnF7 does not exist. Because in Mnf7, The lone pairs of 'F' feels heavier repulsion due to heavy crowding of Fluorine atoms. So MnF7 is unstable and does not exist.{ But for MnF4 only Four 'F' atoms are present hence MnF4 is stable not MnF7) But in Mn2O7 the Oxygen atoms are arranged in tetrahedral manner, and Only 4 oxygen atoms are present for single Mn atom, hence it feels less repulsion and Mn2O7 is stable and exist.
